AND THIS TOO IS NOT A STUPID QUESTION but one of Metastocks' own f...... ups for NOT providing
proper explaination in the Downloaders Manual and not getting rid of all the variaty in the ways to convert.
Because of the lack of only one(1) standard conversion, from our users, 9 out of 10 DO HAVE loads unanswered
conversion problems in the Downloader, wich obviously puts them right off the program.
Also, the Downloaders' manual might have been easy to use with DOS-versions, ????, but in the Windows'
version there are too many "buggs", created by us "not knowing how to get it all set the right way".
Below find an instruction file we use with our daily "Indexes" updating(Metastocks' own PRN-files).
When reading the instructions, replace any "PRN" with the by you applicable "ASCI" file type extension
(TXT,ASC) and replace "FIBBS" with "Temp", then temperarely create the desired folders(you can
always delete these folders later when finished comparison).
Then "Run" through it and try this converting, using "your asci-file" as the source-file placed in
the right folder. Then when succesfull, compare this 'routine' to your own 'routine' to see where you
went wrong(my guess is that the DL cannot write to the folder, either because that folder does not excist,
or they are not properly ordered, or with the (old DOS) addressing-convention protocoll, that the adress is too long.
For this, lots of people now use "C:\Ms" as their main data-folder(recommended), with any subs or
sub-subs underneath. Do not make a too great extension as to the sub-subs and sub-subs-subs, this will
slow down the (daily)conversion even more).
Also in your ASCI file place the proper colums' contents header(not the one mentioned in the DL-manual,
wich is way of for any ASCI file conversions) on the first line and delete any blanc lines at the bottom
(use f.i. Notepad). Here is an example of the CORRECT one we use with ASCI-files:

MS-FILE FILE-CONVERSION VIA THE METASOCK-DOWNLOADER(DL).

1.-INSTRUCTIONS + WORKORDER:

1-1 The Msxxxxxx.prn files are made-up every "exchange-working-day"
Start of the updating-files began on 980209.
1-2 A list of ticker-symbols and the security-names are enclosed(Ms-IRB.sym)
to enable you, after the first conversion, to rename the securities
with their proper name, but please do NOT change the ticker-codes themselves
in the Downloaders Data Pane's small ticker window.
1-3 In Win95-Explorer: -make a new folder Ms under the folder Fibbs
at adress "C:\Fibbs\Ms"
-make a new folder index under the folder Ms
at adress "C:\Ms\index"
1-4 Save all mail-attachements with their orginial file-name("save as")
to disk in the newly created folder at "C:\Fibbs\Ms".
1-5 In Win95-Explorer: -make a copy of the saved mail-attachement "Ms-IRB.sym"
and move this copy to the Downloaders' program folder
(to folder "DlWin" at adress: "C:\Equis\DlWin")
1-6 In the MS-Downloader(DL) convert(button "Convert") the Msxxxxxxx.prn-files
as Ascii to Metastock, WITH the next conversion-configuration-settings:

Filename: Msxxxxxx.prn (first time this will be the Ms980209.prn)
or press "Browse"-button and select the apropiate file
"DESTINATION":
File Type: MetaStock
Folder: C:\Ms\index

Date Range: First Date: (blanc,don't change)
Last Date: (don't change, should be "todays date")
Use today date: apply
Max errors: 1000
Max warnings: 1000
Traverse Source Folders: (don't apply)
Periodicity: Daily
Minutes per bar: (not active)
-"DESTINATION":
If file excists: Append data to end file: apply
Replace matching dates: apply
Replace excisting file: (don't apply)
Include Open&Open Intrest: apply
Create New Files: apply
Traverse Destination Folders: apply
1-7 Click "Ok" to return to the main conversion window
1-8 Start conversion(better known as updating the Metastock-files) by using
the above mentioned configuration settings
1-10 When the conversion/updating has finished, close the
"conversion report"-dialog window
1-11 Then change each secutities' name with the Downloaders' build-in
"Symbol Look-Up" tool, using "All" as the group, and "Ms-IRB" as
the exchange.
Any future daily "updatings" can be done the same way as discribed above, with
the acception that the "options" pages will not have to be attended.
