BUT, since he mentioned that he could read the column heading after sorting I figured that what he really needed to do is widen the column so the text obscured by the arrow indicating the column was sorted.

Actually - you can make it taller.
All programs in Windows use same font for the UI.
Go to Windows Control Panel, Screen settings
"Appreance" tab, then "Font size" and change it
from Normal to Large.
