BUT, since he mentioned that he could read
the column heading after sorting I figured that what he really
needed to do is widen the column so the text obscured by the arrow
indicating the column was sorted.

Go to Windows Control Panel, Screen
settings
"Appreance" tab, then "Font size" and change
it
from Normal to Large.
