The fact that phpBB does not use those mods means nothing. Remember that there are thousands of mods out there, so it would be impossible to expect that they install every one of them. The mods I linked do have sample implementations you can look at for actual results.

About the "average users", message boards do reduce the number of repeated questions with tools like stickies and forums dedicated to Beginners only. I myself am beginning to use AB recently, and feel like a leech every time I have to ask a question the answer to which I could probably find in under a minute by searching a board.

Speaking of Excel, my favorite community, and probably the largest, is MrExcel which incidentally uses vBulletin. ;)
