The real issue with VM is one of CPU overhead which is likely to be on the order of 20% …

Depending on what one does with what is running in VM this may or may not be an issue i.e. if the CPU was typically 50% utilized and is now 70% utilized this is not going to have a material effect.  However if one routinely runs things that typically causes the CPU(s) to be maxed out then the effect may be an issue.

Herman,

I believe my system is actually more reliable using virtualization
software (not that I have a choice). I backup the entire virtual
machine to a RAID backup every night. A couple of times, I have
messed up and recovery was as simple as "connecting" my backed up
virtual hard drive and copying back over the damaged file. The VM
system that runs AB has the absolute minimum configuration for AB so
it is not that large to just back up the whole VM as opposed to say
the AB folder. Since everything else I run is on Mac OS X it is
isolated from the usual Windows attacks. I could actually have
several VM configurations of different AB setups on the same machine,
each in their own VM running side by side with all my general purpose
programs.

I would not discount VM setups as being potentially unreliable as they
actually offer more options for a robust setup.

I could say a few words about reliability in the mix and match world
of Windows, but I am to bigoted to be believed. ;-)

Best regards,
Dennis
