You make an interesting point. I belong to a trading board (paid
subscription) with a number of very helpful posters. Every month
everyone on the board is asked to email the names of the two posters
they would like to honor with their votes because of help they
received, help they saw rendered to others, or just because they made
them laugh with their posts. In other words, voting for two who make
the board a better place to hang out.
The two with the most votes are named posters of the month, an honor
bestowed by their peers. They also receive an extra month added to
their subscription end date (worth $50) by the owner of the service.
Of course the financial honorarium is not large compared to the work
put into posting, but it is the recognition by both their peers and
the company that is well received. Others who received votes are also
mentioned by name in the announcement of the winners.
I know on this list people are appreciative of help they receive and
offer their thanks. Perhaps something like this could encourage just
a bit more participation by voters and votees. Worth considering IMHO.
