File backup/sync tools are not replacement for Drive imaging tools especially for system partition, though it is sufficient for data partition.
I have not tried SyncToy, instead, have been using something call SecondCopy for the last five years. You can do one way backup, sync, exact copy, compression/encryption etc.
and it has never failed me. It is running on the background all the time and is "set and forget" type of tool.

Jim, I was using SyncToy for mirroring my Client C: to a Backup drive in background and got the impression that SyncToy is slowing down my PC. More in particular downloads etc. may encounter severe delays. Any experience with that ?

  Ton.

For those who have bought external hard drives and seek free backup
software, I have been using SyncToy from Microsoft. It has many options
for left to right transfer, and works flawlessly.

    I highly recommend SyncToy.
