Hi Jim,
I'm really happy with the free version of the antivirus software found
here http://www.avast.com/ , it has an automatic update feature for
the program itself and the virus patterns which it can download and
install without you ever having to think about it again. Another point
to consider is that the program works seemlessly with MS Outlook or
The Bat! emailing clients.
I've experimented with many a firwall after ATGuard sold out to Symantec
a few years ago and Outpost seems to work quite well http://www.agnitum.com.
There is a free version of Outpost but the paid version is worth the
few dollars they charge. A good user forum is worth something too
and the moderators on the Outpost forum http://www.outpostfirewall.com/forum
do a pretty good job if you have any questions or issues.
