I too use the free version of AVG. I check for updates every other day.
I also use 2.15 version of Kerio Personal Firewall (previously Tiny).
Manually configurable to keep out intruders. I can see the red arrow on the
shield in the systray when an intruder wants in. yea--lots of red arrows.
