re #2--when i view your .csv file, the YDM format is displayed as 4/14/2003.
i did as you suggested and created a Custom date format that works. the
date in the .xls file also contains the time "3/15/2004 6:00:23 PM"--this
from D2.
i'll try the AB export, edit in Excel and change the Date format using a
custom format and i'll see what happens and then Import.

Hi Ron,
1) the 'large number' is the number of days since 1/1/1900 or thereabouts.
2) RE changing your date format: see the attached where I have done just
that (with Excel 97, no less!) via Format | Cells | Category: Custom (and
then just put in the Type field: 'm/d/yy', 'y/d/m', or 'd-m-yyyy')
