Hi Tom,
I've written a program called PowerScan which can help you learn AFL, there is a trial version located at the amitools web site. Obviously nothing beats hard work combined with the desire to learn like your life depended on it. What I found most helpful in the beginning is to clearly write out step by step in english, what I wanted the code to do, and only then attempt to write the code. There are many dedicated people on this forum that will enjoy answering your questions if its evident that you have put in a little time in the first place.
