One free alternative is easystockdater that downloads from Yahoo, and has a
built in converter which can save the data in a format that Metastock
download will import, or any format you set up.
It is available for download here:
http://www.easystockdater.com/
I have used it and it works when AmiQuote works, and has problems when
AmiQuote has problems.
Understandable since both use Yahoo data.
