Actually, compression is *faster* than non compressed.  Both ways.

The determining factor for speed is how much data, and what kind of
system you have.  If you use USB2, there is a data transfer rate
limitation a bit lower than the transfer rate on very fast drives
today.  In any case, figure about a minute per GB probably.  It's
certainly not going to be hours.
