AmiBroker is very fast, easy on memory, and very programable. I use relatively simple systems. One of my favorites is Turtle trading (buy/sell 15 bar High/Low) on intraday stocks. Help is just an email away and there are extensive archives of files and emails.
As far as backing up, are you using CD-RW for your nightly backups on databases? This is very practical. I don't backup every night - more like monthly. I could replace the lost data fairly easily.
Metastock is way too slow cruise through big databases using explorations, scans and especially backtests. It is very profitable to keep big databases, so you find the best stocks to trade a particular system. My returns have gone up significantly by extensively backtesting several systems across big databases. This would take weeks on Metastock and you wouldn't get the output you need to make intelligent choices. (like drawdown statictics, etc.) Equis used to know what traders needed, but went downhill about when Reuters took over.
I gave up on Metastock when it started to take 15 hours to run a backtest on single system across my main database. How much is your time worth to you?
Need I say more...

Anyway, there are parts of it that are interesting. But has anyone
spent a bunch of time with AmiBroker and then switched back to some
other program?
One thing that seems strange is AmiBroker stores each symbol's price
data as a separate file which is amazingly inefficient on space and
awkward because i would imagine, literally thousands of files could
get touched at the end of the day on price updates. I backup daily so
waiting for my backups to complete would be painful as each of the
thousands have to be written to my backup drive.
Aso the trial version for 30 days does nto let you save so you cannot
really play with it after you spend time downloading. a definite bad
idea.
Thots?
