Earl,

we can probably be optimistic in the long run. After the Roaring Twenties
came Depression, painful lessons were learned, whereupon a time of
unparalleled progress began. These cyclical, probably helical, elements in
the history of economics are certainly there.

It seems to me, though, that the phenomenon of declining ethics is not
economically rooted - quite the opposite. If there are 20 people in a house
who live by the principles of greed, deceit, and instant satisfaction, then
mistrust, strife, and discord will be the result. There will also be an
imbalance (to put it mildly) in the psychological, financial, even medical,
situation of the inhabitants. The only way to permanent peace and prosperity
would appear to be for them to change themselves into high-principled
individuals so that cooperation and progress would become possible.

Looks like this world comes with some kind of learning machine built-in.
Behave nobly, then others will also behave nobly towards you, and peace and
happiness will ensue. Be selfish, then others will also be selfish, and
discordant results will come. Reminds one of what mother taught us; reminds
one, also, of some theorems of Game Theory. But that is another story...

Best,

Michael

On a positive note, Michael, I don't really believe that ethics have
disappeared but have been in a cyclical decline which will be reversed after
the business of payback has been finished. This is where the intermingling
of cycles, markets, crowd psychology, and politics gets really interesting.
I think you are correct ... nearly every country in the world has been
over-stimulating it's economy in the hopes of avoiding unpleasantness. This,
of course, has elevated "idolatry" as paper assets have become king.
Ultimately, the false gods will be exposed and payback will arrive. In my
book, it is a matter of "when" and not "if", but the "when" can take a long
time.

These problems (health care, tort reform, etc.) are there, but I think they
are symptoms of a fundamental disease that has gripped not only the US but,
more or less, every nation on the globe, my own (Germany) included. This
disease is the partial loss of work ethics, or even of ethics in general -
in government, law courts, business, media, everywhere. IMHO, we need to
return to "Plain living and high thinking", as Wordsworth put it more than
200 years ago.

At the risk of getting back a few scornful comments, here is Wordsworth's
poem, written in 1802. I confess it touches a chord in me; maybe it will be
meaningful to some of you as well.

O FRIEND! I know not which way I must look
For comfort, being, as I am, oppressed,
To think that now our life is only dressed
For show; mean handy-work of craftsman, cook,
Or groom! - We must run glittering like a brook
In the open sunshine, or we are unblest:
The wealthiest man among us is the best:
No grandeur now in nature or in book
Delights us. Rapine, avarice, expense,
This is idolatry; and these we adore:
Plain living and high thinking are no more:
The homely beauty of the good old cause
Is gone; our peace, our fearful innocence,
And pure religion breathing household laws.

Have a nice Sunday!
