I had a feeling it was a hoax since some of the
questions could not possible be answered as posed, by 8th. graders.  For
example the question regarding how many bushels a wagon would hold would require
calculus to answer since the grain would be piled on the wagon in the shape of a
parabolic pyramid and could be only estimated by geometry.  Other questions
require either a computer or an assumption on the part of the student,
particularly question 6. Find the interest of $512.60 for 8 months and18 days at
7 percent.  If it is simple interest fine, but if it is compounded it would
be difficult if not impossible without tables or a computer.  Others have
incomplete information such as 7. What is the cost of 40 boards, 12 inches wide
and 16 ft. long at $20 per metre?  Do they mean square meters or linear,
and why since lumber is priced by the board foot.
