My wife's previous machine was a IBM 770 Thinkpad with 14" screen and I
thought it was the neatest thing since sliced bread. The machine was solid
and the online support was fabulous even though the machine was out of
manufacture (and out of warranty). When I installed NT4 and W2000 on it, I
had no problem finding current drivers. It was my intention to buy one of
the new A+- somethings for myself. Then the battery refused to charge and
all attempts to find service for the machine were fruitless ... the service
companies wanted corporate business rather than individuals. I contacted
IBM's support line several times to try to get repair service or find a
company which would repair it. In each case I ended up talking to a
Pakistani/Indian who spoke nearly unintelligible English and knew nothing of
US geography. That was it for doing business with IBM. I think this might be
a far different situation for corporate users.
