I've bought two laptops from Dell and wouldn't go anywhere else. The reason
is simple ... laptops require competent service people for the life of the
laptop and Dell is the only firm I am reasonably certain will still be in
the PC business for the life of my laptop. I also take the 4 year in-home
service contract. The larger of the two is a 1600x1200 Inspiron 8000 which
I've used to trade for nearly 3 years. I can display almost as much on it as
I could on my dual 17" desktop system. Don't be afraid to go with a
refurbished unit if you can find what you want and save at least 10% ... you
can get the same 4 year service contract.
The 8000 was originally a refurb 7500 which had 4 in-home service calls in 2
months ... basically a lemon. I insisted on a replacement machine and Dell
refused but had a change of heart after being contacted by my state Attorney
General. They replaced it with a (more fully loaded) 8000 which needed the
display replaced a few weeks after it arrived. No problems since. A year
ago, I needed a 14" laptop for my wife and bought an Inspiron 2650 ... no
problems at all. In these days of impersonal service, no company is going to
be a joy to deal with but you want one which is going to be around.
As for machine, I wouldn't worry about performance items ... they are all
blazingly fast enough unless you do scientific work. I run 15-18 open apps
on my 800hz machine including 5 real-time trading apps without a problem. My
wife does intensive graphics work in PhotoShop with her 1.6ghz 2650 without
any delay. Do get the best display you can afford and a big disk drive. Get
minimum memory and then buy memory from crucial.com to max out the machine.

Group-
Would anyone care to please share their recommendations? My local computer
guy (I live in a very
small town) doesn't keep any in stock for obvious rreasons. Would also be
good if any members of
our group used Ensign software on their laptops. That's my main reason for
wanting to get a laptop;
along with internet access.
I've got the basic specs I need and am going shopping on Saturday. I'm
just confused on what brand: Dell, HP, IMB, Toshiba, or the new Sony
GRV670. Thanks group for any feedback or experiences you can share.
