It depends. On the positive side, Lindows is very stable and much safer than
Microsoft Windows. It is also a lot faster, and does not do the snooping and
data mining that XP is, let us say, strongly suspected of doing. Excellent
MS Office replacement software and a plethora of other applications are
available at very low prices, or for free. And, last but not least, Lindows
is great fun to use.
Like many other Linux products, Lindows comes with a Microsoft Windows
binary compatibility software based on WINE (read the faq at
www.winehq.com). In theory, WINE should enable the user to run any software
originally written for MS Windows, but don't hold your breath (or only a
little). If you try to run typical Windows trading applications such as
Metastock or NeuroShell or TC2000, you may or may not, but most likely will,
run into problems. If so, you will be on your own, because Lindows does not
officially support WINE. Probably best to try to run your favorite software
on Lindows before you buy.
OTOH, pure Java applications such as Interactive Brokers' TWS will run on
Lindows flawlessly.
As regards native Lindows software, there is a large amount of Linux
applications available, some free, some not. You might have a look at
http://freshmeat.net for a first impression. Unfortunately, most of the
popular trading applications have not been written to run on Linux.
Lastly, though Lindows shields the user well from many OS tasks, you need to
realize that any UNIX or Linux system is an extremely powerful piece of
software; it might take a newcomer some time to gain full command of it.
Hope this helps.
