PNG is good. Just note that older browsers (IE 4, as I recall) had probs
(didn't display) PNG files, so there may be interoperability problems with old
software. These days though, PNG files are frequently used on the net, so it
may not be a problem.

JPG is generally better for photos/pictures than graphics/tables/charts,
because it interpolates the image, which caan create shadowing and fuzziness
when the chart is enlarged.

I think the large JPG above might've been due to the resolution and number of
colors you chose.
