Generally, it is ok to read email on yahoo/hotmail, because you have to
explicitly handle each attachment. (Nothing to launch things for you).
However there are known cases of IE scripting holes being exploited to
launch or spread viruses/trojans inside of email, targetted towards Hotmail
users (and other services). The services (Hotmail) do adapt and its not
always malicious or effective, but people are always looking for new ways to
be creative. But honestly, unless you have reason to be very paranoid, the
80% solution usually suffices (e.g. keeping up to date on patches and
antivirus updates).
