I'm not aware of any viruses carried by .jpg files, though there are
several that are .vbs or .js files disguised as .jpg files. A search of
Symantec's virus site did not reveal any either. Clyde's assumption,
however, that any attachment can be infected is the smart way to go.
Also, be aware that many e-mail clients like Outlook and Outlook
Express automatically display .jpg and other file contents in the
preview pane. There used to be an exploit that caused some viruses
to execute when the e-mail was viewed in the preview pane. I'm
not sure if the attachment file is literally opened during preview, but
I've always been uncomfortable with this feature. Maybe someone
here could clarify this process.
Also, be aware that some nasties are contained in the html code in
the body of an e-mail or access a website. I suggest avoiding html
e-mail whenever possible, set your e-mail client to use the "Restricted"
or higher security settings to avoid running scripts, set your firewall
to restrict outbound http traffic from your e-mail client, and always
always use up-to-date anti-virus software.
