I've considered the pendulum analogy also. But the way I see it, the
pendulum is of the Edgar Allen Poe variety and the Constitution lies
on the table beneath it. With each swing it swings lower and lower...

GP> It has been interesting to watch the opinions fly.
GP> My 2 cents plain... the opinions are well thought out and may come to
GP> pass... or not...
GP> But the one thing that should not be overlooked is just how "uncorrelated"
GP> all these comparisons are; late 19th century, 1929, 1972, 1987. The
GP> differences between these periods is as important as any similarities we
GP> might try to draw now.
GP> This is still a vast and complex dynamic. The only thing we can really be
GP> sure of, perhaps, is that in the end, when we look back, this will be
GP> unique, and unlike any other.
GP> I keep watching people read so much into current weather patterns, just like
GP> they have for all my life, and my father's life, and his father's. It still
GP> doesn't mean that the conclusions about "why is the weather the way it is"
GP> have any more cause and effect than the entire financial, government,
GP> educational, world dynamic all rolled up into one.
GP> Emotions come and go, they converge into a mass, then dissipate. Rebellion
GP> is in, religion is back in (with it's own fractures), mod in is,
GP> conservative is cool. The U.S. is a hero. The U.S. is the devil.
GP> But the one thing I always marvel at, is how that pendulum just goes right
GP> on swinging, back and forth, over and over. It never seems to just...
GP> stop...
GP> In fact, there might be reasonable causality in comparing the fractioning of
GP> opinions everywhere as indicative of our getting close to one end of a
GP> swing. Or perhaps it might mark the middle of the swing. Perhaps we as this
GP> chaotic system called the human race just get a lot more emotional at the
GP> peak of uncertainty, as we struggle with the gall of not knowing what may
GP> happen next.
GP> "Do something..." is the rallying cry of uncertainty, and that is the
GP> gnawing feeling I'm left with.
