IMHO the U.S. Education system is about to produce far less educated, intelligent, and capable adults than ever before.  The problem starts in the first grades and exponentionally accelerates from there.  And the reason:  teachers.  And the reason behind that:  Low teacher salaries.  We, as a country cannot expect to attract educated, committed and passionate teachers to a profession where we basically ask them to "give up" their own lives as a sacrafice so that our kids will be taught well.  In California, Governor Davis has actually asked people to do this.  I wonder why he doesn't try it himself or ask a few CEOs or CFOs that are good friends of his to try doing that:  accept about $25,000 - $35,000 yearly salary in a large urban area, put in 8 hours a day teaching, about another 2 hours per night doing preparation, go to teacher conferences, parent/teacher conferences, individual meetings with students, and other assorted extracurricular activities.  Oh, yes, median price of house in California, over $250,000 (go try to buy that on a $35,000 salary).  The education system is sinking and sinking fast, and all the efforts they're putting into it are wasted, going in the wrong direction.  Will have to abandon the bully pulpit now.  Sorry, pet peeve.  Back to lurking.  (P.S. Father of a 6 year old.)

The US education system is neither as good nor as bad as some would have usbelieve. The US remains a hotbed of engineering and scientific innovationand much of the required brains and education is produced right here in theUS. This is the reason that so many countries send their best and brightestminds here to learn. It's true that we hear a lot about the shortage of talent in the hightechnology industry and the industry has done a good job of making its caseto the press and to congress via its lobbyists. The public seems to bemindless of the simple fact that the industry uses this "shortage" to bringin hundreds of thousands of (relatively) low paid workers on "H" visas evenas large numbers of older technology workers were unable to find jobs. Theultimate irony is that many of these workers have learned US technology andreturned to their native countries where they are founding companies tocompete with US based technology firms, especially in the software business.Earl----- Original Message -----From: "ira" <mr.ira@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>To: <realtraders@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>Sent: Saturday, September 21, 2002 6:57 PMSubject: Re: [RT] Service vs Manufacturing economy> Were is the talent coming from to operate the high tech companies?  That> talent is coming from oversees.  We can't even produce an intelligent work> force.  There is one ever expanding area of the economy.  Tattoo parlorsand> body piercing salons are popping up all over.  Now there is a real future> for your kids.  Am I missing something here?  IraTo unsubscribe from this group, send an email to:realtraders-unsubscribe@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxYour use of Yahoo!
