right now the ecns' are doing approx. 50% of the
daily qqq volume with quoted prices better than the exchanges
most of the time and instant execution instead of
the specialist jerking you off in the execution specially
on the stops.

i'm constantly using ecn's to trade the cubes-you
also save specialists fees that way.

the biggest artificial price right now is an
exchange listed seat that will collapse as soon as the
good boys at the sec decide that
the intermarket system needs to include the ecn's orderflow.

if that happens those seats will collapse just like
the option seats when ISE got on board.
i like to use the analogy  of the NYSE as
that overpriced and overrated Country Club that only selected few are allowed to
join and benefit from its <FONT face=Arial
size=2>membership.

then again i'm biased as i was a  market-maker
for 15 years. a simple definition of a market-maker is that you compete

in the marketplace for the execution and
positioning of the order-flow; a specialist doesn't have to compete-he just
quotes the prices where it serves his best interests as long as he satisfies the
minimum liquidity and quotation rules as established by the
exchange.

i use cybertrader by the way.

    You wouldn't see QQQ's on a Level2, since it is
    an exchange traded (listed) security;
    the typical display you see with the market
    maker depth is for Nasdaq stocks only.
    On the other hand, I have Real Tick and on this
    platform, you can display listed stocks, including QQQ in a Level2 window,
    but instead of seeing different MM's on the tiers, you just see the quotes
    from all the different local exchanges they are traded on (like
    NY, AMEX, Nasdaq, Boston, Chicago, Phila, Cincinnati, etc.)
