* In the news, Standard & Poor's announced that it will purge seven
companies not based in the U.S. from its S&P
500 Index and replace them with seven domestic firms, as it adjusts the
index to better reflect the performance of
U.S. large-capitalization issues. Unilever, Royal Dutch Petroleum, Nortel
Networks, Alcan, Barrick Gold, Placer
Dome and Inco have been identified as those being banished, with United
Parcel Service, Goldman Sachs, eBay,
Electronic Arts, Prudential, Principal Financial and Sunguard Data named as
the replacements. The move is
scheduled to occur after the close on July 19.
