Re: [RT] Oil!

Good points Norman,

I am looking into getting a wind generator for my location, and will be
transferring lighting loads to the battery system. So that's a plus. Takes a
load off the oil patch. Course, when you account for the cost to manufacture
the battery, and transport it here, you might have a negative bottom line.

But consider, your pool would be nowhere near 90 degrees here. And you can't
get here on solar panels, they don't float. And you can't get anywhere else
with solar panels either. So for some things we do need oil, and for others
we don't. I can sail my boat, and that's a form of solar power, but it's not
cost effective to do it.

There are fish plants in Alaska that render fish oil as part of the process,
and burn the oil to generate the steam to render the fish. They transport
the fish oil in tenders that cannot burn it and have to burn diesel to
transport the fish oil where it is needed.

I guess you could make the argument that everyone should move to Florida,
but I suspect that would not go over too well with the homeowners
association.

So, if you are ready to kick the hydrocarbon habit, are you also ready to
kick the benefits it brings? Like food from farther away than you can walk,
or an airplane trip to somewhere, or a computer so you can trade the
markets, or in fact the liquidity that exists in the markets we get to trade
today? While there is an airplane that flies strictly on solar power, it can
only lift its own weight, it has no payload. So right now the no hydrocarbon
culture also is the no transportation culture.

Philosophically I am with you Norman, and physically I live in a place where
I can thrive without any hydrocarbon habits if I have to, but do you?

My dream is a little cold fusion generator about the size of a grapefruit,
though it could be made in designer colors, and it powers every energy need
I have, that my family has for all its generations, it costs nothing,
hydrocarbon-wise, to produce or to operate, cannot harm the environment, and
puts all the nasty oil companies out of business. Until then, the
hydrocarbon addiction still makes sense to me. Believe me, as soon as I can
heat my house for less than $1.69 per gallon, I will.

Cheerfully,

Michael
