Gila,
Given how close you are to the situation, your patience and voice of
reason on this issue is exemplary. It is only through discourse like
this that misinformation can be combated and blind prejudice
eliminated.

called "From Time Immemorial," by Joan Peters, a British historian.
She started out doing research for Jimmy Carter on the Palestinian
cause, from a pro-Palestinian point of view. She even interviewed
Arafat (this was when he was in Lebanon and not easy to get to by a
Western researcher). After doing much thorough work, she produced
this substantial tome. It is probably the best historical analysis of
the Palestinian-Israeli conflict ever done. She did not start out
with a pro-Israeli bias, but read the book if you want to invest the
time and effort to understand the situation in a not superficial way.

the way that you might understand it. It is nothing like the civil
rights struggle in America. I met a young, liberal, Jewish American
travelling around Israel last summer. He came here to see how "we
were oppressing the Palestinians and denying them their rights." He
could only imagine the problem based on his "model" of the struggle
of the blacks in the U.S. for their rights. He imagined that Arabs
weren't being treated at hospitals, that Arabs were being denied all
basic civil rights. He probably thought they had to sit in the back
of the bus and drink from separate water fountains. He was very
surprised when he couldn't find any evidence to support his "model."

overthrow of the U.S. government and is not covered under "free
speech."
