The best single thing you can do is NEVER, NEVER, NEVER open an
attachment unless you know absolutely, without ANY doubt, for utterly
and positively sure it is OK. :-)

The recent viruses were all very easy to spot right away - they all
have an extra file extension such as important.gif.scr. A typical
(unsafe) setup will hide the .scr part and it will look like a .gif
graphic. When you open it, you're dead.

If your mail reader automatically opens attachments, you're really
asking for it. Set it to make opening them as hard/inconvenient as
possible. :-)

There are other things to deal with different viruses, but this one
thing would have prevented the most recent infections. Being careful
is much more important than a virus detector, IMHO.
