The way some franking machines work, I would have thought there would be every chance of not being able to read the date - therefore presumably invalid. I believe our rule of being there on the day, for the official count, and the voters responsibility to ensure it is, puts the onus where it should be...
We have never had such a close call and although we do not have an electoral college, the popular vote does not necessarily produce the government - it is just first past the post with constituencies. With luck, because of your 'problem' with the machines and holes punched and the fact that people can complain and 'apparently' get judges to order recounts, etc, etc, we will not get your system - but stick to the manual X in the ballot paper. If you vote for the wrong person, that is your fault. You can get another paper if you make a mistake when at the polling station, but once it is cast, that's it. Done. Finished. It is either a valid paper or a spoilt one. Doesn't matter who is looking at it, that's it.
