crazy12331 just gave us a fairly nice write-up on the
origins of the electoral college. I hate to encourage him
by responding to an off-topic message, and I swear not
to do it again, but there's a tiny possibility that someone
else here (in addition to the crazed fellow and his source)
might also have overlooked the most significant factor in
the thinking of the Founding Fathers: They hated the whole
idea of political parties -- damned if I blame them, personally --
and devised a system to be used in their absence. The
value of the electoral college, IMHO, changes markedly if
you have a party-based political system.
No, please don't waste bandwidth replying. I already feel
guilty enough about posting this.
