Thanks for the highly interesting post. German media have been reiterating a
different theory - that the electoral college was introduced because of the
traffic conditions prevailing in those days which would render a ballot by
popular vote unfeasible. It seems they were totally wrong.

What a priviledge to be living in this historic.  Please take the time to

The process was never intended to be democratic. The first presidents were
appointed by elites, not elected by the masses. Not until 1820s, with the
rise of Andrew Jackson, did popular voting have a role in the selection of
presidents
