Excerpts from NABE release carried on Reuters. It has long been my
contention that the long lamented "lack of pricing power" would
disappear as entire industries were allowed (by cash hungry politicians)
to consolidate into a limited number of major players who busied
themselves shuttering production. Add to this a stretched workforce and
you have the ingredients for a major inflation cycle: business able to
pass on cost increases and improve margins and labor in a position to
demand higher pay to offset rising costs.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - More U.S. firms are raising prices to take
account of higher costs than at any time in the last five years, and
almost half of the firms in a new survey expect further price rises this
year, the National Association of Business Economics (NABE) reported on
Friday.

The NABE survey asked 127 NABE companies for their views on industry
conditions in the second quarter.

In data giving a different picture to the signs of slowdown from other
indicators like retail sales, the NABE survey showed a large percentage
of firms were able to pass price increases for their products on to
consumers.

``About a third of our NABE panel was able to pass along price hikes in
the second quarter, the highest percentage in 5 years,'' said Diane
Swonk, president of NABE and chief economist for Bank One Corp. in
Chicago.

``This mimics a pattern seen in the first quarter and suggests that
something has clearly changed in the ability of firms to raise prices
over the last six months.''
