<x-html><html>Hello. A couple of days ago I mailed my first group posting, but I
must have sent it wrong, because I have not seen it manifest.
Hopefully this one will work.

I recently saw my first UFC video. I have heard and read about UFC,
but this is the first time I have seen. I must say that I was quite
impressed, and my hat is off to anyone willing to compete in such a
thing.......although I respectfully wonder how someone like that is
wired.

My main comment on the UFC, is that I think it is a healthy thing for
martial artists such as myself to WATCH, if for nothing else than to
serve as a perspective aid. I love the traditional arts, and have
trained pretty much in only that mode. I am but a lowly Shodan in
Okinawan Karate (Shudokan), and dabble in Kung Fu on the side.
However, I have no illusions that my training necessarily makes me a
great fighter. I do believe, however, that with common sense and an
honest look at reality, a traditional martial artist would have a
definite advantage in self defense that would not be there without
training. I believe that things like the UFC help people like me keep
a perspective. Like I said, my hat is off to them, but as someone said
in an earlier post, I would not be willing to try to do that kind of
damage to someone else, and risk that type of damage to myself, for the
reasons of competition.

I train in Karate because I love it, it's good for me in many ways, and
it's fun. I believe in training so that myself and my life outside the
Dojo are enhanced, not torn apart with injuries. Also, having had a
very serous back injury, resulting in two nine inch steel rods in my
spine, I cannot afford the risk. Although I had no big illusions
before, seeing the UFC competitions is a healthy reminder for me as to
the real differences between what I do, and what they do, and helps me
keep a sober perspective. I'll be glad to give them the place of the
"real fighters".

I would be very interested in what the higher Dan grades in this group
think about this.

Thank you, Mark.
