Paper trading, which is unfortunately all you can do
before the real thing, is a weak indicator of success at best. You
need to develop a method or system covering entry/exit decisions and
position sizing. You need to pick a time frame, to factor in a cost
structure, to allocate enough capital etc. Having some software is
meaningless. You must have confidence in your method so that you can
    consistently apply it.

As I noted a couple of weeks ago, there was some significant broadening
displayed by my breadth models which suggested a healthier market might
lie ahead. This coinsided with increasing small cap momentum as shown by
the SP/Ru2000. The Vanguard Index funds include a fund which tracks the
Ru2000, and a pair of sub-funds which track the Ru2000 Growth and Value
sub-indexes. The strength in the ND100 and Ru2000 suggested that the
growth fund would be the best performer. What's been most notable is
that while the R2000 fund has moved up smartly, the Ru2000 Growth fund
has moved up furiously and appears to have considerable more room to
upside, while the Ru2000 Value fund has not yet managed to recover its
former high. Same is true of the Vanguard SP index Growth and Value sub
funds.

Thus, it would appear that the improving breadth has come from the
search for more tech stocks rather than a true broadening of the market.
Not the techs can not carry the indexes higher, but we won't see a truly
healthy market until the value indexes start getting some real money.
