[RT] RE: Re: Software Alternatives to TradeStation/Custom indicators..

I tested Ensign for a while and found it to be so unbelievably flexible as
to make your mouth water.
Unlike Tradestation where you are "trapped" inside a loop of bar-by-bar
evaluation for your Easylanguage scripts, Ensign allows you to write scripts
which control the entire app. It's analagous to writing VBA for Excel/Word
etc (though its Pascal and a lot more clunky in practice. In the end I gave
up my trial of it for 2 main reasons

1) Charts are limited (and therefore system backtesting) to 2080(ish) bars.
2) realtime data support is DBC only (for me anyway).

When I asked if (1) would change I was told it would definitely NOT change.
Same for (2).

Those aside it seemed a decent platform and if you're prepared to hunker
down and write a fair bit of code you can effectively customise it as much
as you want.

Regards,

Robert

indicators..

It's been my experience that Trading Techniques is not much more
responsive to software problems than is Omega although TT seems to do a
better job of quality control before releasing the product and patches.
Since purchasing AGet, I've found several bugs and feedback from other
AGet owners tells me that these bugs have been previously reported to TT
and have been around a long time:

a) AGet does not display metastock bond and other data properly which is
tick (e.g. 32nds, 8ths) based rather than decimal based. Rather than
implement a couple of lines of code to resolve the issue, TT insists
that the data be preformatted with the decimal portion as ticks,
non-Equis downloaders do not do.

b) AGet frequently offsets line origins by one or more bars horizontally
when rendering lines

c) Open Interest displayed on weekly and monthly charts is aggregated
and the aggregated data is pulled from the wrong daily bars. Open
Interest should never be aggregated into weekly and monthly charts.

d) Volume displayed on weekly and monthly charts is aggregated from the
wrong daily bars.

I've used a lot of software from a number of vendors and my own
experience has been that there is no vendor which can touch Ensign
(www.ensignsoftware.com) for quality, responsiveness, support and value.
A far second would be Equis. TT is near the bottom. Omega is the bottom.
