Personally, I like both beans and corn for long term investment, however
I much prefer the short term technicals in the corn (bought more today)
while the beans have been more corrective than impulsive of late. The
intermediate term charts look best in beans followed by corn and wheat
doesn't look good at all. Generally, I'm prepared to use very wide stops
in the grains as long as they are behaving well. However these little
rallies give one an opportunity to buy some put protection cheaply which
frees up cash reserves for bigger
positions. Also calls can be sold against the contracts to bring in some
cash flow. All-in-all, one can approach any commodity in a manner
similar to which one approaches the acquisition of bargain stocks. Beans
and corn are not going to double overnight and there are going to be
many starts and stops but I figure there is $7500 per contract to me
made in corn and $20,000 per contract to be made in beans over the next
2-3 years in return for very modest cash risk without employing high
leverage.
