I got a long email from Sophie relayed from RT
showing your disatisfaction with the GrainTrader site and on top of it making
some assumptions that we considered ourselves GODS. I often wonder why
people who need to learn something make assumptions they know more than the
teacher. If you want some carpentary work just come and knock on my door, before
I trust you I will want to see some previous work you did. Anyone who mentions
my name in despatches on the net is going to be subject to a reply from me. The
first thing anyone heard about you in GrainTraders was when you rudely announced
you were leaving. Did you contribute anything while you were there? I was away
so I don't know for sure. If you did then I will foregive you, but, as I am
writing this not to insult anyone in this RT group I will save my comments for a
private email if you choose.

Having started designing and developing computer systems in the early 60's,
it was second nature to approach trading from the systems point of view when
I first took an interest in the markets 15 years ago. I spent untold hours
over many years creating and developing logically and mathematically based
systems and indicators which I would backtest over long periods of history
(longer than the bull market). I built some good stuff but never found what
I was looking for. One day I was browsing B&N, pulled Edwards & McGee off
the shelf, spent a couple of fascinating hours browsing it, and ended up
taking it home. That was the beginning of my real education on the structure
and psychology of markets.
I believe that getting a handle on the psychology of trading has little to
do with systems or methodologies and everything to do with acquiring
self-knowledge and self-discipline. If you can't pull the trigger when you
should, or you can't set a loss limit and stick to it, there is no system in
the world which is going to solve that problem.
Ultimately, each trader much choose the tools, time frame, and methods which
mesh with his/her capitalization, risk tolerance, and trading goals. By my
definition, a discretionary trader has developed and uses a framework of
rules and methods which provide the basic techniques to enter and exit
markets. The "plus" for a discretionary trader is the ability to apply a
sixth sense to the markets which allows the trader to adapt to markets as
they evolve and change. The "plus" for the system trader is the defined
structure and psychological belief in the system.
The autopilot analogies mentioned here as the ultimate proof of programming
over human judgement begs the question ... why bother to put human beings in
the cockpit? The reason they still put human beings in the cockpits of those
multi-million dollar planes loaded with hundreds of human lives is that
there are times when all the programming in those black box pilots is simply
not capable of dealing with an unusual or unexpected event. I believe too
that the chess analogies used here are an inadequate corollary to the
markets. Chess has a fixed board and fixed rules for the movement of each
piece on the board, thus the variables are known. The combinations and
outcomes are primarily a challenge in calculation. The markets are far more
diverse than a chess game and are essentially a challenge of the unknown.
Thus, the trading systems developer is constantly faced with adapting and
back-fitting his/her system to whatever the market throws at the developer.
This is why so many trading systems must be constantly refitted and
optimized to keep up with the markets ... a fact which should not be lost on
those who have been looking to short the equity markets.
Anyone who has attempted to program basic chart patterns in their various
combinations and permutations is well aware of the tremendous programming
effort which is required to even begin to approximate the cognitive
abilities of a practiced human eye/brain. It has been my own experience that
it's easier to train the human eye/brain through education and constant
practice than it is to train the computer through programming. Your mileage
may vary.
