VIX demonstrates strong seasonal tendencies (see attached chart). The
chart looks at the average behavior of VIX over a calendar year, starting at 100 on the
first trading day of the year. The value on the x-axis is the number of the trading
day in each quarter. Note that each quarter was truncated at 60 trading days, even
if it had a few more, in order to normalize the charts, so there can be a slight "gap"
from the end of one quarterly series to the beginning of the next. As you can
see from the chart, generally VIX hits its high for the year on the 18-th trading day
of the Q4 (ie, late October), and then drops quickly to almost a yearly low by
the end of the year. So far, this year is on track to repeat this seasonal pattern.
