GEN:Bid and ask quantities

When I get quotes from my broker via the Internet, price is presented along 
with bid and ask quantities.  Sometimes the values are the same, sometimes 
bid is larger and sometimes ask is larger.  I would appreciate some 
assistance interpreting this type of information in terms of supply and 
demand.
