Some laptops come with a seperate port for your modem. ie: The standard
modular phone plug goes right into the machine. Others will have card
slots and you just add a cardmodem. If you go this way, I would consider
an Xmodem as the phone jack plugs right into the modem where as with all
the other card modems, they require an adaptor cable which fits very loose
and will pull out at the very worst times.

Computers aren't capable of transmitting to satellites or sending wireless
signals for any distance so you will need to go the modem route. If you
will be using a cable system for your internet service, be sure to ask
about a cable modem and since as you travel, you will not always have
cable, you would want card modems for both types of service.
