As to your list, I would suggest the following.
1. Pentium and Celeron are both the same company and are fine along with
AMD but you will pay a premium for the INTC processors with no visible
gains in performance.
2. They will all have L2
3. Buying the computer to compute or listen to music? :) If both, I
suppose DVD is worth the money but certainly not for me.
4. It is worth the money to have a larger screen. I would look at 14"
screens. As they say, it's *your* eyes.
5. 3D controllers are primarily for games so only you can answer if there
is value for you.
Now, here's what is really important.
1. If you plan to keep this portable for more than two years, get 128mb
RAM. It's cheap now and well worth the extra you pay for it.
2. Get a 56K modem upgrade.
3. Get a minimum of 2mb video ram. (Preferrably 4mb-8mb)
Most everything else is fluff and an individual thing. As to brand, I have
had many portables and although I have not owned a Prostar, at this point,
I would buy a Compaq. They are very highly rated in terms of customer
service which is critical. I have had a Royal with was junk and they
wouldn't support the product. I currently have a Sager which is 3 months
old and 1/3 of the key board characters have worn off already. There is no
reason to pay up for brand name in a desk top but a lap top is a different
beast. Get the big company behind it, you'll need it and you'll be glad in
the long run. If you have an aversion to Compaq, go to IBM. (Compaq isn't
a lot of premium for the name anyway).
Good luck,
Bob
