You don't have to worry about your computer being compromised as long as
you don't accept dcc sends while on Irc and don't run any .exe file that
you are unfamiliar with that you might have received in Email or by any
other means. A cable connection is much faster than a dialup modem but
more so for downloading than for outgoing traffic. Other than that, it is
no more risky to use than a dialup connection.
