Tom,

Go for the simpler stuff. You don't have to be an astrologer to
use their techniques. Search for books on predictions on
astrology, first read the simpler ones first before tackling the
more difficult techniques, go for the small books first before the
larger ones, go for the one that seems to put it into a scientific
approach rather than the subjective approach first. Go for the old
looking books before the newer ones. Go for the cheaper books before
the more expensive ones. Go for the authors that acknowledge the
weakness
in astrology and attempts to put forward their own.

Join a library which have access to a large collection of astrological
 books.

If you do this you will maximise your time spent in astrology and
see what many have missed. One book will lead to the other and you
would have discovered possibly several lost art of predictions. It is
then up to you to follow-up on your work. You will soon realise you
can mix and match. I've discovered others which is not mainstream
astrology but at this point in time does not have the means/setup
 to do any work.
