Thom:

The first thing you should do is get a battery backup for your computer. My
house and trading room are in a forest and when I first moved here, the utility
service was less than acceptable--meaning, we lost power several times a month.
That is unacceptable when you are trying to watch the markets and trade. And so
I installed a very nice UPS battery backup that supplies each of my computers
about 45 minutes of power in the event of a power outage or brownout. It also
conditions the power that your computer uses, so that their are no power spikes
that could damage your computer.

I also have a automatic generator that starts automatically when my power supply
is interupted--In approximately 7 seconds after the power supply fails, the
generator, which is powered by natural gas, automatically begins supplying
electricity to my trading office. During those seven seconds, the UPS battery
supply keeps the computers up and running as if nothing hapened. The switchover
from normal power to natural gas generated power is seamless.

Most people would not need a generator, but a quality UPS with a generous amount
of battery-supplied power is a 'must' for those of you that make your living
trading and rely on your computers for real-time quotes.
