I agree on the hardware firewall/router. I would also keep your
computer on a battery backup and surge protector, not only to protect
against total power outages, but against momentary power lags that can
corrupt data(http://www.apc.com/solutions/index.cfm?segmentID=1).
I would suggest using a second computer for everything except trading,
and for redundancy in case your main machine goes down.
Also, I suggest keeping a log of all orders with time placed,
quantity, etc., separate from the trading computer, in case the
broker or the exchange or the computer does something weird. This has
saved me on more than one occasion. Good luck!
