Put on my "Internet thinking cap" a la "www.searchlores.org" right after
the post...
Goggled for a minute and found this link:

opened up SmartFTP and viola'
took down the patches and the bird is up again... ;)
thanks all for your help - you might want to do the same if you have a
similar situation - waiting for tech support to remember that they have
an anonymous ftp site set up for this specific purpose might be a whole
lot of *unnecessary* *pointless* and *avoidable* aggravation.
Thanks again to those who responded to my cry for help so promptly!
