PERFORMANCE
I have no direct comparison between Intel and AMD, however my ISP is
involved in the SETI program, where he does calculation runs and sends
the results back to SETI. He does these runs on either an AMD +1800 or
a dual P4 (2.0Gig I think) and he is of the opinion that the AMD is
noticeably faster. FWIW.
The numeric coprocessor support in AMD is (or was) better than the P4,
and AMD was the choice for number crunching. In 2004, about mid-year
the compiler support for Intel P4 sse2 is supposed to be working, in
which case they become equal....if you are compiling your code.
Therefore generic windoze software, such as TS, an AMD should
provide faster number crunching, but the performance may not be
apparent. Intel's introduction of hyperthreading may be sufficient to
overcome any AMD advantage...which is why I chose P4s some months ago.
As for SETI, you should feed it some ticker data, it is more likely to
find something on that.
