   I'd suggest Python or Java.  Avoid .NET or anything that locks you
   into Microsoft.


The established repository of readily available Perl sourcecode
(cpan.org) swings a lot of weight in such decisions....

But having been down this road myself, I agree with the need for
financial backing.
