I've done it.
On Win2k, running 16 monitors - so XP should be fine. This wasn't using Matrox cards though, rather Leadtek Quadro4 400 NVS's (http://www.leadtek.com.tw/workstation_graphic/quadro4_400_nvs_1.html - they're 8 dig/analo monitors per board, but also they're PCI based - you need multiple slots, right? and most mobo's don't have > 1 AGP slot).
Here's the caveat: It was -hard-. I was told by many experts in the field it couldn't be done. Essentially in order to do it, you'd need a complete reinstall of the O/S. Of course, I did it without requiring the reinstall (that's a whole -other- story *grin*), but it wasn't trivial, it did take a couple of days, fulltime.
